A spokesperson for Drake now claims that Berry initially gave permission for the artist to obtain the photo from Getty Images, on the condition that it not be used for "promotional purposes." In an email to EW, they wrote, "Halle at first stated he can use her photo but then said no after further conversations because she assumed it was for his official cover art, which that wasn't the case.
While teasing their upcoming collab last week in separate social media posts, both Drake and SZA shared a version of the cover featuring Berry to promote the song. The slime image in question remains on both SZA and Drake's Instagram pages at the time of publication, but the photo is not used on streaming services as the artwork for the single.
EW was provided screengrabs of Drake recapping the situation to one of his representatives in an Instagram DM, writing, "I did dm Halle Berry and got her permission, she said no. I went to the company and we got [their] permission but I love Halle Berry and this has been taken out of context." Though she was not specific about her grievance, fans quickly made the connection between her post and the recently released artwork. Berry divulged more details on the situation in the comments section, when pressed about her reaction to the single's cover. When one commenter asked Berry her thoughts on the photo, she replied that the rapper "didn't get my permission.
