No longer able to sustain its budget because of state-imposed property tax caps, the School City of Whiting has launched its first operating referendum drive that voters will consider on Nov. 7.
Superintendent Cynthia Scroggins said the district is seeking a .17-cent increase per $100 assessed valuation to ensure it can be competitive in teacher salaries. Two other Lake County districts — the School City of Hammond and Lake Station Community Schools — also have referendum petitions on the ballot. With about 1,100 students, Whiting is one of the smallest districts in the county with just two separate schools.
