Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Chapter 96 of Dragon Ball Super finally offers an explanation for one of the most frustrating moments of Dragon Ball Z, where Gohan lost track of the potara earring, preventing him from fusing with his father Goku. Though this powerful fusion was teased in Dragon Ball, fans have never seen it in any of Dragon Ball's official sequels or spinoffs, making it a big mystery.
Back in the Buu Saga, Goku was brought back to life by the Elder Kai and given his potara earrings so that Goku might fuse with Gohan and defeat Buu that way. When Goku arrives on Earth, he has one potara earring already on and is holding the other in his hand. He yells out for Gohan to catch, but Gohan isn't even close to catching it, forcing him to scramble around and dig through the rubble in the hopes of unearthing it.
Goku and Gohan's Fusion Plan Failed Because of Gohan's Bad Eyesight Chapter 96 of Dragon Ball Super sees Gohan and Piccolo battling with the Gamma androids #1 and #2, and coming to realize that they don't have to be enemies. The Gammas are finally recognizing the evil deeds of the Red Ribbon Army, and begin to change sides when Commander Magenta launches Cell Max.
Rather than Goku's aim being off when he tossed the earring, it seems more likely that Gohan had a hard time seeing such a small object and had no idea where he needed to be to catch it. It was rather reckless of Goku to try tossing the earring as it is, but it's much more so if he was aware of Gohan's poor eyesight and did it anyway.
To this day, Gohan and Goku have yet to fuse in canon, using either the potara earrings or the fusion dance, and fans often lament this lost opportunity. While Gohan missing the earring did open up the possibility of Vegito, it certainly would've been easier to defeat Buu had Gohan caught it and been able to don the earring. Dragon Ball Super has finally offered an explanation as to why Gohan missed the earring--it's just too bad he had to miss another important item to admit it.
