Kate Linebaugh: With COVID deaths in the US now over 800,000 and the new Omicron variant spreading fast, it feels like the fight against COVID is never ending. So we thought it was a good time to talk to one of the nation's leading COVID experts, Dr. Anthony Fauci. Dr. Anthony Fauci: My message is that the end is in sight. We can actually end this with a combination of...Dr. Anthony Fauci: Well, I think it really underscores that this is a very unpredictable virus. We did not anticipate the power of the Delta variant. Remember last December, when we started to realize that we could vaccinate people, and then when we really in earnest, after the new administration started scaling up the implementation of the vaccine, things looked really quite good.

Dr. Anthony Fauci: I think it's a combination of both, but what we're seeing now clearly with Omicron is that right from the get go, you have a diminution in protection. Even if you were vaccinated three weeks ago, it's less than the protection to Delta. There's no doubt about that. If you head to head compare a person who was vaccinated and at the peak of their protection, the protection against Omicron is less than the protection against Delta.

Dr. Anthony Fauci: I think we will, but that will mean that a lot of them are going to have to get infected. And a lot of them who get infected, if they're unvaccinated, a lot of them are going to get hospitalized. And when a lot of them get hospitalized, a lot of them are going to die.
