Purdue toyed with outmatched Ohio State as Zach Edey was dunking, Gene Keady was snarling, Braden Smith was swaggering and Matt Painter was beefing.
Newman hounded Rutgers guard Derek Simpson into turnovers on his first two touches. In the semifinals Saturday, Newman was assigned Ohio State point guard Bruce Thornton, who came in averaging 10.3 ppg but was going to be asked for more; backcourt mate and leading scorer Brice Sensabaugh was ruled out before the game.
Smith played a nearly perfect game Saturday with 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. He took five shots from the floor and made all five, including two 3-pointers. He took two shots from the line and made both. His only imperfection? He had one turnover, one of those attacking, driving, leaping passes he throws to nobody, because he finds himself in mid-air before all of his hopes and dreams are dashed and he throws the ball away.
After Smith’s first shot from the floor, a 3-pointer, he ran by the Purdue bench and pumped his fist to Painter. Later he dribbled behind the back for a step-back 17-footer, then tossed in a 14-foot rainbow of a floater, then played a two-man game with Edey for a 3-pointer, then split two Ohio State defenders on his way to the rim. Everything he does, he does it with swagger or a sneer or both. He does it with moxie.Also: Zach Edey was a pitcher.
