'We know what’s coming with Rutgers. What Rutgers did tonight didn’t shock the coaching staff. We sold it and sold it and sold it, like, ‘Hey man, these guys are coming.’'

Thing is, Painter isn’t surprised by anything he saw on that stat sheet. Disappointed? Hell yes. Because he and his coaching staff knew. They. They knew Rutgers would bring the defense, bring the effort, bring the intensity — bring the grime — and they’d tried to warn the Boilermakers . That’s what the past few days of preparation had been for Purdue: Painter and his staff had tried to get their players ready for warfare that would be as much mental and emotional as it was physical.

“For us as coaches,” Painter was saying when asked about Rutgers being such a difficult matchup, “we’re always talking about it because we know it’s coming. We know what’s coming with Rutgers. What Rutgers did tonight didn’t shock the coaching staff. We sold it and sold it and sold it, like, ‘Hey man, these guys are coming.’

“The thing that jumps out for me are the turnovers,” Painter says, referring to the 13 errors his team made, most of them forced mentally, not physically. Rutgers had nine steals, but not because it has superior size or athletic ability. Rutgers had those nine steals because it’s like Painter was saying:“I thought we had some unforced errors there,” Painter said. “They’re a tough team … but it’s not impossible . We just have to show more resolve.

It was Smith, in fact, who passed up a 3-pointer in the final seconds to have Brandon Newman try one in the final second, a shot that bounced softly on the rim before falling off. Painter took care to say Smith will experience growing pains as a freshman point guard in the Big Ten, and that he’ll get better after a night like this one.
