Averaging a career-high in minutes played this season, Mitchell will do everything he can to stay on the floor. The Cavs, who have lost 4 of their last 5, will host Detroit on Saturday and Boston on Monday before hitting the road for four straight games.
Despite feeling less than 100%, with another groin injury that Mitchell admitted felt similar to the one he suffered in January, Cleveland’s All-Star began aggressively attacking the basket, racing past defenders, bouncing off them around the rim and whirling in layups. He scored 12 straight points for Cleveland during one dazzling stretch late in the third quarter and finished with a game-high 44 points on 17 of 32 from the field and 4 of 12 from 3-point range in 44 gusty minutes.
“We were down 20,” Mitchell said when asked what allowed him to play through the pain. “In some of those moments, honestly, you’re playing off of adrenaline.” So, Mitchell, Bickerstaff and the team trainers all agreed that having him stay in was the best option. Mitchell played all but 71 seconds over the final two quarters, being pulled at the 1:36 mark when the game seemed out of reach -- even though a late flurry of 3-pointers sparked hope and led to him going back in for the final few possessions.
