'It felt like this was just kicking us while we were down,' Blueberry River First Nations Chief Judy Desjarlais.
“They’re worried about the landmarks to their trapline areas, plus there are certain landmarks in the traditional territory for ceremonial purposes,” Desjarlais said.
In January, the Blueberry River First Nations struck a management agreement with the province to protect 6,500 square kilometres of territory over infringements to their Treaty 8 rights from the cumulative impacts of industrial development.Article content Doig River First Nation Chief Trevor Makadahay said he knows that his people have lost a number of traplines and cabins in the fire zone, but were able to protect a group of five cabins in the Hunter Lakes area, about 100 km east of Buckinghorse River on the Alaska Highway.
Makadahay hopes there will be more priority placed on preserving forests over timber production. The area burned includes old-growth areas, “because we don’t have much left.” Gray said recent history has taught ecologists that forests don’t always come back after such large fires.
