Donald Hudson, an Illinois appellate judge and earlier a Kane County judge, died of complications from cancer on April 11 at his St. Charles home, said his wife, Gerilynn. He was 74.

“Whether he was writing a song or writing an opinion, or working on Supreme Court rules, he was passionate about everything that he did,” said former Illinois State Supreme Court Justice Michael Burke.Hudson, 74, died of complications from cancer April 11 at his St. Charles home, said his wife, Gerilynn.Born in Chicago, Hudson grew up on the West Side and graduated from Austin High School. An avid musician, Hudson was in a rock band during high school called Edges of Wisdom.

In 2004, judges in Kane County’s 16th Judicial Circuit elected Hudson to be chief judge. He was reelected chief judge in 2006. Hudson presided over numerous high-profile murder trials, including those of Willie Buckhana, who was found guilty of taking part in a 1999 triple murder in Elgin. Late in 2008, the state Supreme Court appointed Hudson to chair a special committee whose mandate was to formalize rules of evidence for court cases in the state.
