How the satirical movie is spurring discussion on climate change
... [+]The recent Netflix satirical movie, Don’t Look Up, has drawn considerable attention. The plot is about two Michigan State University astronomers, Dr. Randall Mindy and a doctoral student Kate Dibiasky , who discover that Earth will be hit by a planet-destroying comet. They bring this to the attention of the US President Janine Orlean , who first discounts it and then seeks to use it for political gains. The US plans to use space rockets to deflect the comet.
The movie hopefully has accomplished what is sorely needed; making climate change a topic of dinner table conversations or, its modern equivalent, social media discussions. Hopefully, these conversations will motivate some soul searching about deeper issues of political and citizenship failures to tackle long-term threats. The movie illustrates a political failure: how short-termism along with the role of money in politics impede science-focused decision making.
Many hailed the role of social media during the Arab Spring. Yet, it seems that most social media users are interested in following celebrities instead of engaging in meaningful policy conversations. Take the case of Generation Z and Millennials who profess deep concern about climate issues and accuse the baby boomers of ignoring it. Yet, most of them seem to use social media for following celebrity lifestyles.
“Kylie embodies and embraces a lifestyle that is pretty much the opposite of carbon neutral.. . she also has entire rooms full of things she’s only worn once. . . . In polls young people always claim to be more concerned about climate change than other generations, but they don’t act like it. . . . The cognitive dissonance between planet-destroying conspicuous consumption and planet-saving rhetoric is breathtaking.
