The safety and economic benefits of autonomous trucks are simply too great to ignore.
Far too many people are killed each year on California’s roads, with more than 4,400 lives lost last year. Fatalities resulting from crashes involving a truck are a particular area of concern: between 2011 and 2021 these crashes grew by 47% in the United States. Tragically, these statistics fail to capture the emotional and financial toll on California’s families and communities.
Autonomous trucking will help address the epidemic on California’s roads by removing human errors, which are the overwhelming cause of fatal crashes in America. Autonomous trucks perform all aspects of the driving task and don’t get distracted, text while driving, or get tired. There has never been a fatality involving an autonomous truck, and federal government data validates the remarkable safety record of autonomous trucks.
Despite the promise of the AV trucking industry, some California legislators are playing politics with safety and have passed AB 316, which would effectively ban autonomous trucks in the Golden State. Now Governor Newsom has an opportunity to course correct and veto this misguided bill, allowing his Administration’s experts to evaluate and safely regulate the technology.
It is important to underscore that AB 316 is a premature overreaction because the technology is not yet permitted on California roads. The Newsom Administration has been exploring autonomous trucks and the regulations needed to oversee their safe testing and deployment. As the state’s top safety experts, the California Highway Patrol and Department of Motor Vehicles have held two workshops on autonomous trucks that allowed for robust stakeholder engagement.
