Canada is almost completely defenceless against competitors for sovereignty in the Arctic — a vast, tempting area rich in resources.

Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai recalled that fighter jets shot down an unidentified object over his territory on Feb. 11, during the security frenzy that followed the Americans destroying a Chinese balloon.

The three territories comprise nearly 50 per cent of Canada’s land mass, yet have less than one per cent of our population of 40 million. One reason Canadians are so complacent is that we have no hostile neighbours attached to our territory or even close by. The deep European fear of threats to territory is alien to us.Article content

Bercuson says: “We need to speed up acquisition of air-independent submarines, speed up the Arctic offshore patrol building program, announce going ahead with at least one if not two Polar class icebreakers, improve communications, and do a lot more exercises of air-sea rescue.”
