El excampeón del U.S. Open Dominic Thiem tiene intención de retirarse al final del año debido a que ha tenido problemas para recuperar su nivel de juego tras una lesión de muñeca. “Voy a poner fin a mi carrera al final de la temporada”, dijo Thiem en un video publicado el viernes en Instagram y lo calificó como “muy triste, pero también un bello mensaje”.
Su victoria en cinco sets ante Alexander Zverev convirtió a Thiem en el primer hombre en los últimos 71 años que remonta tras estar abajo por dos sets en la final del Abierto de Estados Unidos. Además fue finalista en tres Grand Slams: En el Abierto de Francia 2018 y 2019, así como el Abierto de Australia 2020. Su mejor posición fue tercero de la clasificación mundial en el 2020.
