Domestic abuse case reported every day in Ribble Valley 'as cost of living soars'
Ribble Valley Council is receiving a domestic abuse case almost every day as incidents rise amid cost-of-living pressures, councillors have been told.
Councils must assess the need for accommodation to individuals, families and children in their area. But safe accommodation is broader than providing refuges or shelter accommodation. It can include support to let people stay at homes, ‘sanctuary’ schemes, advocacy meetings and crisis intervention. The committee report said compliant ‘safe accommodation’ may be available outside the borough. However, there is a general shortfall of this type of accommodation elsewhere in Lancashire. Furthermore, individuals and families in domestic abuse situations often want to remain in the borough for schools and work.
Mr Hirst said: “The sanctuary system is a process which identifies help. If a domestic abuse survivor wants to stay in their own home, the sanctuary scheme can make them safer with things like new locks, for example. There are various agencies which can help including Ribble Valley Council, if needed. We could contract the improvement work to Homewise or another organisation that does security work.
He added: “There are issues with identifying safe houses [publicly], especially in smaller communities. This can be really challenging. But sanctuary scheme can be flexible in using private or rented homes. ”
