The Justice Department seized $500,000 from North Korean hackers who targeted health organizations in the United States.

The hackers targeted medical centers in Kansas and Colorado, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said during a speech at Fordham University, and hit the organizations with ransomware attacks.

"Today, we have unsealed the seizure warrant and initiated proceedings to return the stolen funds to the victims," Monaco said, according to Bloomberg. She declined to name the Kansas facility. Monaco lauded the organization for reporting its incident to the FBI and implored other U.S. companies to help the bureau combat ransomware assaults by reporting the crimes. The FBI identified a new type of ransomware used by the North Koreans thanks to the Kansas report, Monaco said.

These attacks disrupted health services for"prolonged periods," according to a notice filed by the FBI, Treasury Department, and CISA on July 8. Many notable organizations in the U.S. have been regularly targeted by foreign hackers with ransomware attacks. However, very few of these attacks are reported to federal officials, making it difficult for cybersecurity officials to respond and counter ongoing efforts by Russian and North Korean hackers to steal millions of dollars from U.S. business owners. Ransomware victims paid more than $600 million to cyber criminals in 2021, according to the blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis.

Law enforcement was not involved in the majority of these incidents. Only a fourth of cyber incidents were visible to the FBI, according to a 2021 estimate.President Joe Biden signed a law in March that requires infrastructure providers to report notable cyber incidents to law enforcement within 72 hours and ransomware attack payments within 24 hours.
