In a joke email, a department lawyer floated new appearance standards for video conference calls

In dark times, a moment of jocularity came on Wednesday for the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division.

William Rinner, counsel to Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim, sent an April Fools’ email to the division staff about attire for conference calls. The extremely inside joke cited an email the division’s acting chief of staff sent two years ago telling department employees that they needed to wear business professional attire for meetings in the Front Office. That 2017 dress code mandate set off a bit of a kerfuffle in the division at the time.

Going forward, for VTC meetings with Makan and other senior Front Office leadership , please make sure to dress in business professional attire, and ensure that any other members of your family that may be visible during the calls, including pets, wear similarly appropriate attire. We hope that you and members of your sections’ staffs will comply with these guidelines during the quarantine period. The division’s senior leadership appears to include multiple dog lovers.
