ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — James Outman thinks he knows what comes next.
Things have changed since then. He is batting .171 since April 25, with strikeouts in nearly half of those at-bats , and took a hitless streak of 15 at-bats into Sunday’s game against the Rays. “I think, for me, he’s got to remember the big part of the field. Because he’s getting crowded, he’s trying to pull the ball too much. If he can get back to the middle part of the field, hit some line drives, some flares over there, I think things will get on track and then pull the off-speed pitches. He’s late on some heaters and out in front of some breaking balls.”
When Outman made the team out of spring training, Roberts said it wouldn’t make any sense to have him on the big-league roster and not play him regularly. But Outman’s slump has forced Roberts to re-think how he divides playing time in the outfield. Outman started just one of the last four games on the road trip.
