The Dodgers’ starting pitchers might not go too deep into games this month, as the team tries to offset its depleted rotation by deploying the likes of Ryan Pepiot Michael Grove, Brusdar Graterol, Emmet Sheehan and Shelby Miller as openers, bulk-innings arms or piggyback partners behind frontline starters.
“I think it’s one of those things where the Rays were out ahead of it by, potentially, necessity. But I think the league caught up and realized it’s a really good way to prevent runs and I think, like all things, something that’s new is going to be met with some resistance. But there’s a reason why more teams are doing it.
Pepiot could be a candidate to start Game 3 . He has pitched well since arriving in August . But the Dodgers have used him with an opener as many times as he has started . “I feel kind of hypocritical saying it. But I don’t love it,” Kershaw said. “I think the game is better off when you have two starters going at it. I think fans like it better. I know I like it better as a fan.”On the way to their bubble championship in 2020 , the Dodgers used an average of 5.2 pitchers per game and got barely 4⅓ innings per game from their starters, only two of whom pitched into the sixth inning of a game .
