UPMC Williamsport was preparing for a mass evacuation before power was restored.

WILLIAMSPORT - A hospital in Lycoming County has returned to full operation following several hours without electricity.

City firefighters responded to a report of smoke in the building and then staffed each floor with the aid of flashlights checking on patients’ needs and relaying them to hospital officials. No mass evacuation was needed, but Wagner said two patients were transferred by helicopter to other facilities to ensure they received appropriate care in the event of an extended power outage. The outage affected a total of 415 customers and the cause was related to an equipment incident at the hospital, PPL spokesperson Traci Witter said.

Deputy Fire Chief Keith Lucas said he was told the primary issue was in an underground vault at the hospital. He also did not say if UPMC had discovered the reason the emergency generators did not kick on. Lucas said he understood it was a relay problem.
