New details about Jodie Whittaker's DoctorWho regeneration scene reveal the 13th Doctor's final moments won't take place inside the TARDIS. Previously, only the 3rd, 4th, & 7th Doctors were seen regenerating not inside the TARDIS.

A Doctor Who director has indicated that the final scenes of Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor will be slightly different from what fans may expect. After taking on the lead role in 2017, Whittaker is set to say goodbye to her time in the TARDIS as the Thirteenth Doctor and will bow out in a feature length episode to coincide with the BBC’s centenary celebrations later on this year.

Taking the reins will be former showrunner, Russell T. Davies, who revived Doctor Who for a modern era back in 2005 and now looks set to rejuvenate in once more almost 20 years later. Davies’ new era is set to begin with Doctor Who's 60th anniversary special in November 2023, which will then lead into a new series overseen by him and produced by Bad Wolf Productions.

“Everybody clapped her – and Mandip, actually. Everybody clapped them into the TARDIS for their last time, and then there were some tears, and we shot the last-ever scene in the TARDIS, and said goodbye to the TARDIS, and then there were some tears and then we went out to film, basically, her regeneration. And the last shot that we did, I think, will be the last shot in the episode as well. So it was really nice to do things in sequence.

Stone’s comments clash with how previous regenerations in the modern era of the show have played out, with the Doctor usually changing to their next incarnation within the main console room. This has also sometimes led to the TARDIS receiving significant damage, leading to a redesign of its own, something which has happened enough to be brought up as a recurring trope.

What’s more interesting is Stone’s implication when he says the last shot the crew filmed will be “the last shot in the episode”. No official casting has been made for the Fourteenth Doctor, with auditions having started roughly around December of last year according to Davies, two months after filming on Whittaker’s last episode wrapped.
