Do school vouchers deliver what they promise? | Opinion
shows catastrophic academic loss for kids who transfer into private schools using a voucher, roughly on par with what the COVID-19 pandemic did to test scores.
Research on private schools that actually accept vouchers shows that, for those schools, the answer is no. It’s true that there are many high-quality, mission-driven private schools serving many children. But these schools remain mostly closed to students who use vouchers. Why? Each has its own reasons, but the simplest explanation is that they don’t need vouchers to operate, and they don’t need the students who want to use them.
And whether starting up or just hanging on, those voucher-receiving private schools often don’t make it. Theshows that two-thirds of private schools started in response to creation of the voucher program ultimately failed, closing their doors on average less than five years after opening. This is why vouchers have such a problematic academic record. High-quality private schools with long, distinguished track records do exist. But they generally don’t accept vouchers or the children that use them. When it comes to voucher enrollment, schools tend to take all or nothing.
