There are four minority head coaches and two general managers for teams in a league where more than 70% of the players are African-Americans.
Richard Lapchick, arguably one of the foremost authorities on diversity issues across the sports landscape for decades, is cautiously optimistic that the NFL’s fresh focus on diversity measures will make a drastic difference on its hiring landscape., and team owners are set to ponder two resolutions — including a measure that ties draft picks as incentives for hiring minority head coaches, general managers and other key positions – during a virtual league meeting on Tuesday.
“But in the context of the NFL, I am hopeful that this is going to be a jolt to move teams to do good things. It’s not just like, ‘Do the right thing because it’s a moral choice.’ Like Troy and others, I believe that diversity is a business imperative. It makes you better.
The rule named after late Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney, though, has been scrutinized over the years as many interviews were questioned for their legitimacy. Since the rule was instituted, former Detroit Lions general manager Matt Millen has been the only executive disciplined for failure to comply, fined $200,000 in 2003.
Is the incentive plan the ticket? The proposal — criticized by some current and former minority coaches — called for teams to move up six slots in the third round if it hired a minority head coach and 10 slots for a minority GM hiring, in addition to incentives tied to other positions.
