“I feel like they’re leaving my kid behind.” As schools return in full swing across the U.S., complications related to the pandemic have fallen hardest on already vulnerable families, including those facing financial hardship or lacking transportation.
Taking her older son to school on the civic bus system those days would mean not making it home in time to get her youngest to elementary school, she said.
As districts seek solutions, they have to consider that disproportionate burden, said Bree Dusseault, principal at the Center on Reinventing Public Education at the University of Washington. For her older son, she said, the transition to middle school and missing social aspects of being with peers have been especially hard.
Without those services, she said, he struggles to complete work without constant supervision, which she could not provide while working from home.
