Heard on the Street: Disney is deploying some big guns in the coming streaming war
By Dan Gallagher Aug. 26, 2019 3:07 pm ET Walt Disney DIS 2.23% is already deploying some big guns in the coming streaming war—its fans.
The service goes live in November and Disney has said it expects to have between 60 million and 90 million subscribers within five years. It took Netflix about eight years after it launched its first streaming service to get to that range. With Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and now the 20th Century Fox library under its wing, Disney owns some of the most powerful entertainment properties in the business. That gives it one of the most powerful fan bases—the kind of people most likely to lock themselves into a long-term relationship with the company.
