In the 1990s, Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks and his wife Maureen Hendricks were on the verge of buying a vacation home in New Mexico when Mr. Hendricks spotted a newspaper ad for a sprawling ranch in a remote corner of Colorado, near the Utah border. “I just had to see it,” he said.
