I have telescopic rods in both my legs that help stabilise my limbs due to having brittle bones and low bone density, and one of them popped out of my knee after I made an awkward transfer into my powerchair.
I’m entitled to feel annoyed and frustrated. However, I have also started to feel something I’ve not before.Not towards the non-disabled world and their able privilege, those unearned benefits society affords enabled people, but towards otherPeople whose disabilities allow them freedoms that I do not have; for example wheelchair users who can fly abroad independently, or others who do not have to rely on PAs to help them day to day.
It’s then no wonder that I began to feel jealous of the person who replaced me; someone whose access needs were different to mine and thus was able to step in. We should be able to talk about levels of privilege within the disability community without feeling like we’re playing a game of top trumps. We should be championing one another – even if we do not have the same condition or disability – and highlighting the disabling barriers other members of the community may face.In an ideal world, I would absolutely love to see many more deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people taking a step back and recognising and vocalising their own privilege and supporting one another and speaking up.
