Researchers say it further solidifies the importance of COVID-19 vaccines and other preventative measures to slow spread of the coronavirus.

Over 30 days after testing positive for the virus, the agency found minors who had COVID-19 are increasingly more likely to then be diagnosed with diabetes, a condition the CDC says affects 34.2 million in the U.S. — just over 10% of the total population. “ infection might lead to type 1 or type 2 diabetes through complex and differing mechanisms,” the study found, adding that more cases of “pediatric type 1 diabetes” have been reported during the pandemic. “These findings are consistent with previous research demonstrating an association between and diabetes in adults,” the CDC said.

“First, may directly damage pancreatic beta cells, the ones that produce insulin, reducing their ability to make enough insulin to keep blood sugars controlled. Second, as the virus replicates in the pancreas, it also can damage the cells that directly surround the beta cells, which are needed for proper insulin release,” according to a release from Harvard. “Third, the virus also seems to reprogram surviving cells, making them malfunction, which can wreak havoc with blood sugar regulation.

In the study, nearly half of those under 18 “had DKA at or around the time of diagnosis.” Those who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 and diabetes were more likely to have DKA than those who had diabetes but not COVID-19.
