Ecology Action Centre calls for immediate implementation of Coastal Protection Act | SaltWireST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Industry stakeholders expressed cautious optimism following the latest report on the Northern cod stock in 2J3KL off Newfoundland and Labrador's northeast coast.
Following Fisheries and Oceans Canada update this week, in which they reported the stock to have improved from the critical zone to cautious, the Atlantic Groundfish Council said similar rebounds in the past decade have never materialized. Vanessa Byrne, AGC’s director of fisheries management and science emphasized the importance of the forthcoming March stock assessment, which is expected to offer a range of harvest rate projections they hope will “enable decision makers to better understand the effect that different catch levels may have on stock growth.
Ocean Choice International president Blain Sullivan added that while all parties want to see a return to commercial cod fishing in N.L. waters, it is important that Canada continues its responsible stewardship of this iconic cod stock.”
