CONTRIBUTED A $100-million student and worker housing project called Straitville is planned for Port Hastings on roughly 53 acres adjacent to the A&Wrestauran.
Phase I will consist of five buildings accommodating 220 people. Each of those buildings would cost about $5 million. Phase II would consist of townhouses and developers and supporters are hoping it will attract spinoff businesses. MacInnis and Independent Investment Nova Scotia CEO George Nwangwu are hoping to attract government money for the project but did not have a precise figure on what that private-public split might be.
Building the Straitville residences, he said, should take some pressure off the rental market in the area as well for others in need.It was an idea he struck upon while going door to door as a political candidate, hearing about people’s plights. The needs for student housing are well documented, said Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency account manager Karen Malcolm.So was Misty MacDonald of the Strait Area Chamber of Commerce.Some concerns were raised during the Q and A about traffic.“It's scary," he said.
