The development arm of the United Church of Canada, the property development council, was formed to develop various church lands in B.C. into “revenue-earning properties.”
Colliers was to manage all aspects of the redevelopment, including securing B.C. Housing funding. That funding would require that 51 per cent of the units be offered to renters at “affordable” non-market rates — in this project 92 of the 182 units, according to a church website. But the project, the lawsuit said, was put on hold in July 2020. B.C. Housing had withdrawn its promised funding and all of the $3.2 million earmarked for the predevelopment stage “had been used up.”Article contentFor all those reasons, “abandonment of the Brighouse project and sale of the Brighouse lands became necessary,” the lawsuit said.
The church is seeking relief in the amount of $700,000 as well as money for loss of use of the Brighouse project, loss of rental income, other unspecified damages for negligence and negligent misrepresentation and legal costs.Article content
