On Monday, Downing Street said that talks on a deal with France over Channel crossings were in the “final stages” ➡️ However, in Paris, officials appeared almost perplexed at suggestions the issue was close to being resolved 🔴 Analysis LeoCendro

and claimed Britain’s asylum system is “broken” and illegal migration is “out of control”.

France and the UK already agreed last year to cooperate on preventing crossings: Britain would pay €63m and France would double the number of police and gendarmes patrolling along the French coastline to 200, finance border protection and surveillance equipment and do more to prevent human trafficking.

French authorities say the measures are nowhere near enough to block all crossings. And in a post-Brexit era, France does not share Downing Street’s sense of urgency and has less of an incentive to make this a priority. “We are taking action, but we recognise that police action is not enough: we can chase migrants away one day and they come back the next. But there is a lack of will to agree on legal mechanisms since Brexit.”
