STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOSOTTAWA — Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge said she’s hopeful the government will resolve its standoff with Meta, which has seen the company block news content on Facebook and Instagram in Canada.

The Online News Act forces Meta and Google to reach revenue-sharing deals with news publishers for news stories that are shared via their platforms . Paul Deegan, CEO of publishers’ group News Media Canada, said the group is “forming a broad collective of news publishers, and will be seeking to enter into fair commercial agreements well before that timing.”

How the platforms will react to the CRTC’s plan remained unclear Thursday. Meta and Google didn’t respond to questions about whether they will participate in the consultation process. Google didn’t answer whether it will hold off on its plan to pull news from search and other services until the CRTC process plays out.

Asked whether the government is working on a plan B if it isn’t able to come to a compromise with Meta and Google and the companies pull news content permanently, St-Onge said the government is “going to remain focused on our goal” and is “looking at all options to make sure that we have a fair market for our news media.” She declined to specify what some of those options might be.
