Gov. RonDeSantis is gaining momentum in an uphill battle to face Donald Trump in the key red states of Texas and Iowa, recent polls indicate.
The Florida governor has gained 14 points among Republican primary voters in Texas but still falls behind Trump as a nominee for the highest office.Trump is up 47% to 23%, according to a new poll of over 1,000 voters in the Lone Star State by the Defend Texas Liberty PAC.DeSantis is catching up to Trump in Iowa, an early battleground for Republican presidential hopefuls.
A new survey from Never Back Down, a pro-DeSantis super PAC, reports DeSantis is closing in on Trump by 14 points following the governor’s presidential announcement, according to the poll obtained by Axios. Trump still leads DeSantis among Iowans 39% to 29%, but the governor polled at 24% to 48% last month, a significant jump since he started on the campaign trail.
Republicans face a crowded field, with the candidate list growing to more than half a dozen this week and with a mere 10 percentage points between DeSantis and the former president.Additional Republican candidates are expected to enter the field this week, with former Vice President Mike Pence launching his presidential bid Monday and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie poised to join the race Tuesday evening. Gov. Doug Burgum is set to cast his bid on Wednesday.
“We’ve got a great plan, and I think we’re going to be very strong Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, which is what you need to do if you’re going to be able to win these things,” DeSantis said in an interview this week with Fox’s Brian Kilmeade, adding he has done five stops in Iowa.
