The Minnesota congressman said it's time to close America's political divide, and that as president, he would appoint both Republicans and Democrats to his cabinet.
President Biden is facing a longshot challenge for his party's presidential nomination. Dean Phillips, a moderate Democrat from Minnesota, campaigned Tuesday in New Hampshire, saying it's time for Biden to"pass the torch," even as he praised the president's political agenda.
"It's not about disrespecting President Biden," Phillips said at a campaign appearance at New Hampshire's Institute of Politics at St. Anselm College."I respect him, but he's going to lose the 2024 election to Donald Trump. And that is an existential threat to the United States of America."a businessman serving his third term in Congress, is defying the stance of most in his party who are rallying around the incumbent president.
Phillips responded that he would like to help Biden, but said he is not the reason the president has such low approval ratings. "People around the country are saying they do not want Donald Trump and they do not want President Biden," Phillips said. The Minnesota Democrat filed papers Friday to compete in the New Hampshire primary. His appearance in the Granite State came days after Biden announced he'd chosen not to appearafter the Democratic National Committee, at Biden's request, shook up the usual order of the 2024 primaries and picked South Carolina to hold the first one.
