'The wrong man is sitting in the dock...'defence make closing speeches as Thomas Campbell murder trial reaches final stages

A lawyer claimed 'the wrong man is in the dock' as defence closing speeches continued at the Thomas Campbell murder trial. Mr Campbell, 38, was allegedly 'tortured to death' in his own home after three men ambushed him at his front door.

He said Mr Belfield had told him that Mr Campbell had up to £200,000 worth of drugs or money buried in a field. Mr Cleworth has said he agreed to try and find the 'buried treasure' and steal it, but denied there was any intention to hurt Mr Campbell. "When you walk away from something you have agreed to do, it tells you something about that person," the KC told jurors. "He is not bound by the agreement, he is his own man. He can make his own decisions.

Ms Weekes said it was Mr Cleworth's 'biggest fear' that the jury may convict him on the basis of his previous convictions. "He is just going to have to trust you, members of the jury, that you are not going to do that," she added. "We say that none, not one of those men who attacked Thomas Campbell that night has been caught, that the wrong man is sitting in the dock." She added: "Don't let Reece Steven be the fall guy here." Ms Grey argued there are 'serious weaknesses' in the prosecution case against Mr Steven.

Jurors have heard Mr Steven's DNA was found on an internal door handle of a VW Caddy van said to have been used by the three attackers after the killing. Mr Steven said the DNA could have been deposited previously as he'd been in vans with Mr Belfield before, or that it could have been due to 'secondary transfer' as he'd shaken Mr Belfield's hand.
