Deer Park plant fire is out, Shell says
A fire ignited in the plant's olefins unit just for 3 p.m. on Friday. The blaze sent flames and thick black smoke into the air, where it drifted north toward Buffalo Bayou.
The exact cause of the fire hadn't been disclosed by Saturday morning. Shell said the unit was undergoing maintenance when something ignited cracked heavy gas oil, cracked light gas oil and gasoline.What to know about the Shell chemical plant that caught fire in Deer Park Nine people were treated at local hospitals in connection to the fire, the company said. Their injuries haven't been detailed and Shell said the hospitalizations were for"precautionary medical evaluations." Sheriff Ed Gonzalez Friday said some of the people sent to the hospital were dealing with heat-related conditions.
The Harris County Fire Marshals Office on Saturday morning said its investigators were still waiting for the site to be declared safe before beginning its investigation. Less than an hour later, Shell announced the fire had been put out.
