The bipartisan debt ceiling deal struck by President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy would modify the work requirements for food stamps and welfare.

Under the current criteria to receive SNAP benefits, able-bodied adults without children who are 49 and younger must work or participate in a training program for at least 80 hours a month. The agreement exempts veterans, homeless people and young adults who are transitioning from foster care from thoseCurrently, only Americans who are unable to work due to a physical or mental disability or pregnancy are exempt.The compromise also modifies the work requirements on the TANF program, which provides cash benefits to low-income households with children.
