A minuscule amount, less than 15 grains of table salt, can kill. Last year, fentanyl killed an average of five Texans every day, and almost 500 of them lived in North Texas.

“Not every teen will stick a needle in their arm, but pill-taking is more normalized,” said Dr. David Atkinson, a pediatric psychiatrist who heads Children’s Health’s outpatient program for substance abuse and mental health. “It looks so harmless. They think, ‘What’s different about this and something you would pick up at a pharmacy?’ ”“Everything they are taking that they think is Vicodin or Percocet or OxyContin — all of it ends up being fentanyl.
