The hits keep coming for the Mission: Impossible franchise. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One can only be called The COVID Canary in the Coalmine because it was the first production that shut down due to the virus at the end of February 2020.
It had a hard time getting back on its feet and had to restart production several times, which ballooned the budget, so by the time the film finally came out in July, it needed to do gangbusters, and it just didn't quite get there. It was a movie where half a billion is considered an underperformance. Now, the eighth film and the follow-up to Dead Reckoning Part One has also been hit with delays.
Considering that many of those films are sequels, part of franchises, or recognizable IP, it is smart not to put something original against that. As studios continue refusing to pay actors livable wages and not giving them control of their likeness, the release calendar for 2024 and 2025 will likely continue to shift. We are only a few weeks away from films dated in the summer being unable to finish in time, so studios will have to choose between delaying films or ending the strike.
