It appears that the Ottawa Police Association president is aware of the symbol’s transformation into a racist trope, making his defense of it one of either complete tone\u002Ddeafness or deliberate provocation.
According to The Thin Blue Line briefing report issued by the Vancouver Police Board in January, the “dividing line metaphor is contrary to the principle of policing that ‘the police are the public and the public are the police.'”
So what to make of the hockey sweaters, each sporting a thin blue line crest, that Ottawa police wore during a recent charity game? Either way, it wasn’t accidental. A year ago, Diane Deans, then chair of the Ottawa Police Services Board, asked the labour organization that represents 1,900 rank-and-file OPS members, to stop flying the thin blue line flag over its Catherine Street offices, a request met by silence. On Tuesday, Cox told The Canadian Press that the flag, which he described as honouring officers who have died on the job, will “probably” continue to be flown.
