President George W. Bush bestows the Presidential Medal of Freedom to author and historian David McCullough during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Dec. 15, 2006. McCullough, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author whose lovingly crafted narratives on subjects ranging from the Brooklyn Bridge to Presidents John Adams and Harry Truman made him among the most popular and influential historians of his time, died Aug. 7, in Hingham, Mass. He was 89.

McCullough delighted in fondly recalling his lifelong friendship with the late Dallas businessman and mountaineer Richard Bass, which began during their time at Yale University, and how it blossomed into a love for Dallas — the city and its people. He believed that this special connection allowed permission to uniquely share personal viewpoints during and following his lectures. Two instances stood out.

He reminded a rapt audience that both events demonstrate the perils of nature, and that New Orleans was subject to a unique confluence of circumstances: a very strong hurricane, a vulnerable city at sea level, and a location near the mouth of the largest North American river.
