A brother-sister duo from suburban Darien recently competed in the 2022 Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul, Brazil as the first deaf badminton players to represent the United States in the games.
Jay Yang , a senior at Hinsdale South High School, and Judy Yang , a graduate of Gallaudet University, in Brazil for the 2022 Deaflympics with fellow member of Team U.S.A, Tomas Kratka .as the first deaf badminton players to represent the United States in the games.
With that confidence boost, Judy went into a mixed doubles game with Jay where it took them a minute to adjust to a different style of play than what they were used to. “I tried to win the last game, but unfortunately lost by two points. That was disappointing,” Judy said. “But I have to realize that there’s so many countries that have been doing this for years and for the U.S., it was the first time. But we became the leaders of it while trying to figure out what we’re doing.”
The Summer Deaflympics, organized by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf, takes place every four years and is the oldest multisport event after the Olympic Games. Judy and Jay were two of 136 deaf athletes that represented the U.S. this year.Judy Yang , a senior at Hinsdale South High School, and Jay Yang , a graduate of Gallaudet University, in Brazil for the 2022 Deaflympics.
“Jay just followed whatever I did,” Judy added, to which Jay chimed in, “yeah, without her I had to always try to figure out what was going on. It is a little more difficult when you’re alone but when you have a partner or someone with you, it makes it a lot easier.”
