“I’ve been fighting the naysayers, the doubters, forever,” Haener said Wednesday at the 49ers’ local pro day. “I just love proving people wrong.”
SANTA CLARA — The first memory Craig Bergman has of Jake Haener was when Monte Vista High was finishing up football practice, with the local youth league taking the field.
Haener, a Fresno State product, believes he’ll be selected between the third and fifth rounds of the NFL Draft, which begins in two weeks. He offered the following observations regarding his supposed limitations during a media scrum Wednesday after his practice at the 49ers’ local pro day: — “They don’t understand what’s in . I know it’s a cliché, people can have all traits in the world. But I’m willing to work for it and do everything I can to get there. I feel like I’ve got some traits myself, so I want to put my head down and go to a place that really wants me.”
Haener came of age in the Bay Area in Danville, but he’s got some comparison fatigue when it comes to Brock Purdy, the 49ers’ rookie of similar stature who was a revelation as Mr. Irrelevant, the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft in the seventh round. He grew up a three-wood from Monte Vista and the Diablo Valley Club. Haener’s father Ryan built a lucrative medical supply business and his mother Julie is a longtime news anchor at KTVU.
