Longtime plant watchdog Eric Epstein has filed a petition contesting the transfer.
Three Mile Island Unit 2, disabled since the 1979 accident and awaiting it’s final clean-up, now lies somewhere in the portfolio of a company called TriArtisan ES partners, which may be better known to you as the collector of brands like Cannery Casino Resorts, 8 O’Clock Coffee, P.F. Chang’s Chinese Bistro and TGI Fridays.that believes it can complete the reactor’s clean-up for less than the money set aside in a decommissioning trust fund.
Epstein pointed out Energy Solutions estimate as of December 31, 2020, that it will take at least $1.044 billion for radiological decommissioning at TMI-2. However, prior to the proposed transfer to TriArtisan, the balance of the decommissioning trust fund was reported to the NRC to be $862.5 million.
But Energy Solutions’ latest analysis in March, which is currently still under review by NRC, states that the trust will be able to cover costs on a year-to-year basis because of future interest earnings. Energy Solutions’ analysis places the fund’s balance at roughly $60 million in 2054, when the decommissioning is projected to be complete.
