As violent crime has fallen, more than 83% residents say they feel safe in their neighborhoods. The majority of those who said so live in northern parts of Dallas.

Brian Grammar, 50, said he feels safe in his East Dallas community because he has “lived there a long time and [knows his] neighbors.” Grammar said an increased police presence would make him feel safer, however.She added that she thinks crime has decreased: “I’ve been in Dallas my whole life and I’ve always felt safe here. I think [police] are doing a good job.”

Nicholas Oleaga, 35, of Oak Lawn said that while he hasn’t seen a surge in violent crime, he has noticed petty crime on the rise. But those responses depended on the race of participants: Black residents largely said police do not use force measurably or only when necessary.
