Dallas needs to invest in park and trail safety | Opinion
Park and Recreation Director John Jenkins is aware that there is a fear in some parts of the city that trails and parks are not safe. Much of this is more perception than reality,about murders that police reported, very loosely, as occurring near Dallas trails.
The park department at one point had its own police force. That was eliminated years ago. Now, parks officials make do with a dozen rangers and a dozen Dallas marshals who patrol what they can.Dallas needs to consider making a greater investment in this area. Safe, clean, well-lit parks and trailheads are crucial to the health of the city, especially in lower-income areas where people can’t add a gym membership to the monthly budget or who rely on the parks for family recreation and gatherings.
