Suing the city over the problem of homelessness isn't the solution.

Haley Walton and Hannah Sims with Housing Forward speak to a person staying in an encampment in downtown Dallas before the city’s code compliance department, among other contractors, clear out the area on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024. More than 100 people recently found a fresh start through the Street to Home operation to find permanent housing for people living outdoors in downtown’s public spaces.

Most residents, we believe, want the city to take a harder line about camping in public spaces. Public sentiment and city policy appear misaligned on this issue. But that doesn’t mean Dallas Hero’s response is the right one. Governing by lawsuit is a bad way to run a city. City officials can’t and won’t go back to the days where the answer was to round up homeless people and cart them off to already overcrowded jails.

The real data shows that unsheltered homelessness has dropped 24% since 2021. The city has a goal of cutting homelessness in half by 2026, and city staff andMore must be done. But if Dallas Hero officials, or anyone else for that matter, oppose the city’s current policies in dealing with the homeless population, we urge them not to run to the courthouse, but to the voting booth or to the city secretary’s office.City Council elections are coming up in May.
