The Dallas City Council is split on whether a delay to a proposed May 2024 bond program election could lead to more options on how to close pension funding...
Robert Perez, an assistant city manager who oversees infrastructure-related departments like public works and transportation, said driving factors behind having a bond election in May were rising costs for construction materials and a November election possibly being more expensive for the city.
“At the end of the day, it’s not about the pension obligation bonds,” Broadnax said. “Nobody’s even said that’s a recommendation -- $400 million is not going to save the pension.” He said the city is also doing its own analysis and that employees will make their own recommendations in the future on how to close the funding gaps in the two pensions. He said the city is currently projected to contribute $186 million to the police and fire pension and $120 million to the employee retirement pension next fiscal year.
