that recovered the spacecraft, Orion, from the Pacific Ocean on Sunday and also assisted in other ways to ensure a safe return.Steve Arnette, executive vice president and president of critical mission solutions at Jacobs Engineering Group, said the Artemis I mission exceeded the firm’s expectations.

In Houston at the Johnson Space Center, NASA and Jacobs worked together on a trajectory plan for the orbital flight path of Artemis I. The plan took Orion 268,563 miles from Earth and 40,000 nautical miles from the moon. Engineers from Jacobs also developed and tested Orion’s parachute system, which slowed down the spacecraft from 25,500 miles per hour to 25 mph when it splashed down into the Pacific Ocean.

Jacobs has a team at the Kennedy Space Center’s Thermal Protection Systems Facility that developed and manufactured the thermal protection components to keep Orion safe from intense temperatures when re-entering Earth’s atmosphere.
