LUFKIN — Cypress Ranch and Cedar Hill were tied at 19 at halftime of a Region II semifinal Friday night at Panther Activity Center.
The Longhorns went on a 14-0 run in the third quarter to build a double-digit lead and senior Jadyn Atchison scored a game-high 25 points as Cedar Hill defeated Cypress Ranch 52-41 to advance to its second regional final in four years. “That’s our quarter, it’s always been our quarter,” Collins said. “The third quarter has always been one of our strongest quarters. Defensively, we generate a lot of offense from our defense and I just told them, ‘go back to what’s been working.’ We were going away from what was working on both ends of the floor which was why it was so tight. …
After being held to one field goal in the second quarter, Cypress Ranch went on a 6-0 run early in the third quarter before Cedar Hill answered with 14 straight points to build a double-digit lead, 37-25. The Mustangs got within 50-39 late in the fourth quarter via a 3-pointer from senior Chelsy Singleton before the Longhorns iced the game.
